Rudolf von Jhering (1818-1892) is one of the most popular German legal scholars of international renown. There has been no other legal scholar who tremendously and publicly celebrated the breach of his legal conceptions in the middle of his scientific career. Until today, it is unclear how and how far he has been the called interpreter of his own early conceptions. For this reason, the present work analyses published and unpublished writings, letters and posthumous documents in order to examine continuity and change of his conceptions on the notion of law and juristic methods in the contemporary context of pandectism and theoretical discussions.
