The treaty signed on July 24, 1923, in Lausanne, Switzerland, nullified and revised the Treaty of Sèvres of August 1920. This marks the final act of a historical process that began in 1914, with the onset of World War I, and culminated in the defeat of the Greek army in August 1922 by the Turkish nationalist forces led by Mustafa Kemal. The Asia Minor Catastrophe was an unprecedented humanitarian disaster for Greeks, Armenians, and other non-Muslim communities of the Ottoman Empire. The book analyzes the two treaties (Sèvres and Lausanne), the geopolitical context in which they were signed, their provisions, the National Division, and the management of the Asia Minor challenge. It explores expectations and disappointments regarding the Pontic Issue, the stance of the Great Powers, the causes of the Asia Minor catastrophe, and the end of the tragedy. Additionally, it examines the fate of refugees from 1922 in Greece (rehabilitation, treatment by political forces, relations with the left, electoral behavior) and the refugees in Russia and the USSR.
