Not all fairytales have happy endings. Composers Claude Debussy, Paul Dukas, and Maurice Ravel, through their operas, teach their audiences that love often comes with a price. Stephen J. Trygar explores these operas-from Debussy's epic tale of forbidden love in Pélleas et Mélisande to a temper tantrum gone awry in L'Enfant et les Sortilèges-to allow those interested in attending a performance or listening to a recording an opportunity to understand the message woven into the music by these composers. Vol. 2 of the anthology Tales of Love, Loss, Magic, and Reality provides detailed synopses, moments in the music to look out for, and recommended recordings of each of these operas to make your night out at the opera a more enjoyable experience.

Autorenporträt
Stephen J. Trygar (penname of author, podcaster, and historical musicologist Stephen Trygar) is the founder of Alexandrian Media. A graduate of Temple University with an M.M. in Music History, Stephen began spreading his mission of making art, culture, and history more accessible with a blog titled Musings of a Music Historian. However, in April 2020, Stephen realized that his goal would be better achieved through podcasting and book writing. With two books already published in his anthology Tales of Love, Loss, Magic, and Reality: Setting the Stage for Opera and Ballet, Stephen set out to combine the anthology with his new podcast The Composer Chronicles to share his passion with the world. While these two products primarily focus on the promotion of classical music, his vision for Alexandrian Media doesn't stop there. Stephen's goal is to make Alexandrian Media a one-stop shop for all things artistic, cultural, and historical, so be sure to look out for any new updates!
