After the death of Saul, Israel was left vulnerable to the Philistines. David advanced to the throne of Judah and then of all Israel. He subjugated the Philistines and the neighboring peoples. He established Jerusalem as the capital of the kingdom and brought the ark of Jehovah there, making significant religious reforms that contributed to the unification of the nation. Because of this, God assured him that a Messiah would arise from his lineage, who would reign forever.
