After Israel took possession of the Promised Land and after the death of Joshua, various judges arose who saved the Israelites from their adversaries. These judges continually confronted the peoples residing in the territory of Israel and the opposing foreign forces. The root of these conflicts was disobedience to God, leaving the Israelites unprotected and exposed to their enemies. At the conclusion of the book, a situation of anarchy is portrayed with the phrase: "In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes".
