Minutes later, the city was being shelled - and Mario was off to fight in a war he'd never chosen.

Over the next few years he'd experience the horrors of war first hand - witnessing sheer destruction, death, suffering and broken hearts right in front of him.

Autorenporträt

Mario Bekes was born in Croatia in 1972, then part of the communist country of Yugoslavia. After an unhappy childhood, he found himself in the centre of the Croatian War of Independence in the 1990s. He was eighteen.Mario went on to witness some of the most distressing scenes imaginable and spent 1,852 consecutive days in combat, risking his life on a daily basis.He commenced his career serving in the Ministry of Interior (Special Forces), then transitioning to Ministry of Defence (Military Police and Security Services) for seven years before working in diplomatic security intelligence (Directorate 7) for the Croatian Government. In 1998 he joined the Department of Foreign Affairs in Security Intelligence Services, with a secondment to the Consulate General in Sydney for a further five years.During his extensive military and diplomatic career Mario completed numerous courses - some of them in urban warfare, counter-terrorism, intelligence security protection and other related fields in investigations and intelligence operations.Mario is proficient in three languages (English, Croatian and Russian). He has written several books and articles on investigations, human intelligence and information risk management, as well as hosting a business radio show on Alive 90.5 FM.Mario has conducted numerous internal and external investigation in corporate, government sectors in Australia and overseas, particularly in the field of human intelligence and competitive business intelligence.Mario now runs a successful investigation and information risk company, Insight Intelligence Group, which he founded in 2003.He cites his son's health battles as a source of inspiration. He is also an ambassador of the Shining Light Foundation, caring for the homeless in Sydney, Australia.
