Ukraine is gritty, it's undiscovered, it's misunderstood, and it's a hidden gem in Eastern Europe. It has its difficulties due to war, ununified identity, and complex history. Ukraine is gritty, it's undiscovered, it's misunderstood, and it's a hidden gem in Eastern Europe. It has its difficulties due to war, ununified identity, and complex history. Yet, it captures a traveler in its hospitality, culture, and sense of curiosity. Blue Skiesis a collection of short stories that illuminates each of these elements, woven through a coming-of-age passage of a young American in Ukraine. It is not a travel guidebook that groups Ukraine with other countries in Eastern Europe, nor is it a detailed examination of Ukraine's history, language, or latest news. It is the reflections of a traveler's explorations and discoveries in cities across Ukraine, from the western city of Lviv to the eastern city of Kramatorsk. Through her own personal grief and loss, author Kat Rose explores the obstacles that travelers often face on the road: balancing work and travel, maintaining existing relationships while building new ones, and merging old beliefs with new discoveries.Blue Skiestakes readers on the adventurous ride of what it's like to travel, live, and teach in Ukraine through the lens of openness towards strangers, perseverance through obstacles, and hope in the darkness.

Kat Rose is a travel writer and sustainability advocate from New Jersey. Kat had a unique upbringing: she was born to a father who was seventy-one years older than her. She is also the youngest of her eleven siblings, five girls and six boys. From an early age, she understood the importance of serving others, learning from different cultures, and questioning the "norm." Even though Kat earned a business degree from Villanova University, she spent half of her college career studying creative writing, fashion, and photography in three countries: the Czech Republic, China, and Italy. During that time, Kat launched an eco-fashion and travel blog at www.anewerkatintown.com and traveled to thirty countries in Asia, Africa, and Europe. After graduating, Kat taught English in Ukraine in the summers of 2018 and 2019, and then returned to Ukraine to complete a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship in 2019-2020. Kat continues to build long-term international connections and empower individuals through travel writing, education, and public speaking. If you are interested in working with Kat or scheduling a public speaking engagement, please email anewerkatintown@gmail.com.
