When my mother threw me out of a car as I drove I was nine years old. It happened on a Sunday. I know it's a Sunday because we were coming home from church, and because every Sunday in my childhood meant church, because we always went to church on Sundays. My mother was - and still is - a very religious woman, a very religious Christian. Black South Africans, like all indigenous peoples around the world, have adopted the religion of their colonizers. By "adopt", I mean that they forced us to convert to this religion. The white man was very firm with the natives, and he said, "You must pray to Jesus Christ, because Christ will save you," and the natives replied, "Well, we need someone to save us - to save us from you - but this is sideways, so let's give this thing about Christ a try."
