After the war, he turned to writing, adopting the pen name 'Sapper' from the Royal Engineers' slang for their own corps. McNeile's literary genius is best encapsulated in his creation of the iconic character Captain Hugh 'Bulldog' Drummond, who debuted in 1920 with the novel 'Bulldog Drummond'.
