"Candid, or Optimism" - the most frequently published work of Voltaire. The book was probably written in 1758, and within a year it appeared in the press in five countries under the guise of a "translation from German." At the same time, it became a bestseller and was banned for many years under the pretext of obscenity. The heroes of the work - Candide, his girlfriend Kunigunda and mentor Pangloss - travel around the world, witness the battles of the Seven Years' War, the capture of Azov by the Russians, the Lisbon earthquake, and even visit the fabulous country of Eldorado. The travels of the heroes serve as an occasion for the author to ridicule government, theology, military affairs, literature, art and metaphysics, especially the optimist Leibniz with his teaching that "all the best in this best of the worlds." These words sound like a sarcastic refrain every time new calamities befall the heroes.
