Those ships carried desperately needed things for England, everything from food, medicines, and clothing. And naturally, things to make war-things needed to invade France and end the terror the Germans created all over Europe. This was the time of the war when the Allies finally had enough ships and aircraft to counter the Germans in the Atlantic. The Germans were still very formidable. The Germans were desperate to stop supplies from reaching England; otherwise, they knew it will get much worse for them.
