The French writer Prosper Mérimée chose passionate, destructive love as the subject of his stories. He also loved mystery, history, and the unfamiliar. He was influenced by both Charles Nodier, the writer of the historical fictional novel, Walter Scott, and the psychological drama of Alexander Pushkin. In this novel, which takes place in the year 1830 and achieved great success, the clash in the concept of life, between civilization and gypsy culture, and the contradiction in values ¿¿and way of thinking, is highlighted, in addition to the dynamism of the narrative in its movement from the outside to the inside, and from the streets to the library and history, to the contrasting geography of the characters. . While the narrator is from France, the hero, Jose Navarro, is from Basque, and Carmen, a gypsy, is out of place. The co-narrator narrates the story's events as a visitor to Spain on an academic mission, and during his wanderings there he meets Joseph Navarro, a bandit and thief wanted by the authorities and feared by the public. Although the guide warns him of his danger, the narrator feels comfortable with him, senses his inner nobility, and continues his tour with him. He also helps him escape from the inn when the guide informs the authorities of his whereabouts.
