Neapolitan tenor Enrico Caruso (18731921) performed in opera houses around the world, including more than 800 appearances at New York's Metropolitan Opera. He was the first recording star in history, and his rendition of "Vesti la giubba" from Pagliacci sold more than a million records.
Florence native Luisa Tetrazzini (18711940) sang all of the leading coloratura parts and many of the great lyric roles in opera. Possessed of a clear high soprano with great flexibility, she performed with great success in all of the world's great opera houses and was a popular teacher and vocal coach.
