It is impossible to imagine the literature of the 19th century without Victor Hugo (1802-1885), a French poet, novelist, playwright, and publicist. For the French, he is a poet and public figure, for the whole world he is the author of immortal books. Hugo himself called himself a romantic and remained so until the end of his days. "Notre-Dame de Paris" is the first historical novel in French literature. To describe the cathedral and Paris of the 15th century, the writer studied rich historical material. The main characters are invented by the author: the gypsy woman Esmeralda, archdeacon Claude Frollo, bell ringer of the hunchbacked cathedral Quasimodo (who has long since passed into the category of literary types). But there is a "character" in the novel that unites all the actors and brings together the main storylines. His name is included in the title of the work. This is the Cathedral of Our Lady of Paris.
