Stroke remains one of the main causes of death and disability worldwide. Effective therapy for stroke recovery remains an unmet need. Much hope and promises are placed on cell-based therapies. The aim of this book is to provide focused yet comprehensive reviews on the current state of cell-based approaches in the treatment of stroke. The topics covered include experimental data on functional outcome after intravascular and intracerebral delivery of cells in stroke animals, followed by translational chapters which will rely heavily on the use of different imaging modalities in the tracking of cells. The last and most challenging part will describe the early phase of clinical studies, providing guidelines for future research and clinical applications. Clearly and concisely written, this text will be a useful resource for neurologists, radiologists, and neuroscientists interested in cell transplantation as a therapeutic strategy for stroke patients.

From the reviews:
"This book reviews the methodology of cell-based therapy and discusses potential applications. ... a valuable reference for researchers as well as clinicians who are interested in the evolving field of cell-based therapy. ... This book provides a balanced approach to cell-based therapy. ... The topics discussed here provide insight into the science of cell-based therapy. The information ... is for the most part presented in a manner readily understood by those who are not experts in the field." -- Benjamin H. Eidelman, Doody's Book Reviews, August, 2013

"This is one of the several very good monographs published by Springer concerning the molecular, cellular, and translational models on animal and clinical stroke. The role of stem cells (bone marrow, umbilical, neural precursors & mesenchymal) derived transplants are discussed in separate chapters. ... The advantage of this book is it is very current discussing the most up to date journal data and analysis. This will guide active investigators with information guiding their animal and clinical research studies." (Joseph J. Grenier, Amazon.com, June, 2016)
