Autorenporträt

Elizabeth Stuart Phelps Ward (1844-1911), born Mary Gray Phelps, was an American novelist who in 1874 urged women to burn their corsets. In addition to women's rights, she was active in temperance, antivivisection, and other causes. Her novels about the afterlife consoled many survivors of Civil War dead.
