He was the active supporter of the idea of the independence of Burgundy from France, consistent opponent of the cunning and cruel monarch Louis XI, but he himself was not less cruel and insidious. The legend about the talisman is connected to the name of Charles the Bold - the legend about the opal, bringing misfortune to its proprietor. The duchy of Burgundy had tight relations with the Englishmen, the deep-rooted enemy of the French from the times of the Hundred Years' War of 1353 - 1453. Scots, on the contrary, were inclined to supporting the French throne against their closest enemies, the Englishmen.
