The Chemist is set in present-day Green Bay, Wisconsin, where over the past year a serial kidnapper has been targeting female victims in their early twenties. He is an opportunistic predator, who is flawless. He leaves no evidence, no clues, and no trail for investigators to follow. Even the victims' vehicles have vanished. Cale Van Waring is a homicide detective assigned to the case. When the body of one of the abduction victims is discovered floating in Lake Michigan -- minus her head, pumped full of date rape drugs -- the case begins to move forward. But with no clues or trail of evidence to follow, it quickly turns cold. Now the winter turns to spring, and a fourth victim has gone missing. With the community in an uproar over the potential of an active serial kidnapper/killer in their midst, pressure comes down from the mayor and police chief to solve the crime post-haste. As the investigators profile their potential suspects, one possibility emerges: that the abductor might be someone "e;recognizable"e; to the victims. And in Green Bay, this leads the detectives down an uncomfortable path: i.e. the potential that a Green Bay Packers player might be named as a suspect. This line of inquiry is abhorrent to the city's powers-that-be, but Cale recognizes that he must pursue it, regardless of the odds. Finding a spotty trail of evidence provided by Cale's girlfriend, the plot evolves into a race against time. Will the chemist successfully abduct his final victim? Or will Cale, under pressure from his bosses and his girlfriend suddenly missing, uncover enough clues to rescue a pair of trapped victims from the hands of a sadistic sociopath?With multiple lives on the line, the final confrontation pits the will of an unrelenting detective, against the savvy of a calculating villain.
