Her crime was drowning each of her five children over the course of just one hour, before laying them down in bed as if to sleep. She was initially found guilty of murder, but her charge was changed at her retrial to innocent by reason of insanity. She was then committed to North Texas State Hospital, a high-security facility, and finally to a low security state mental hospital where she remains to this day.
The reason why Andrea chose to kill her children stemmed from her insanity, but expressed itself through her religion. Andrea had always been devout, but had been inspired by her religion and her delusions that her children had been inhabited by demons. It was this that had led her to kill her children on that fateful day.
