Just as in the 13th century, China remains poorly known and widely misunderstood. Most people, politicians included, cannot name any Chinese political leaders other than President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang, but have no problems in reeling off the names of half a dozen US political figures.

If you want books that are critical of China or which paint China as a threat, then there are plenty of these around. This is not one of them. But nor is this collection of insights and analysis a paean for China. Instead this book seeks to explore the issues in more depth, with more balance, and at times correcting the imbalance which has crept into popular media coverage of China.

These analysis notes won't add to your knowledge of Chinese political leaders but they will help you develop a more informed perspective on the important issues in the China relationship.

Guppy is a national board member of the Australia China Business Council which provides advice to Australian government at high levels on commercial and political cooperation with China. He has worked with the Chief Minister's Department of the Northern Territory and with other senior NT Ministers on China matters. Guppy is an invited speaker at ASEAN and APEC conferences in China and has spoken on One Belt One Road policies in China, Singapore and Australia. He is the Australian representative on the Silk Road Chambers of International Commerce. Guppy provides economic market research and analysis for mainland Chinese publications including Shanghai Security News, Weekly on Stocks and China Daily. He writes a weekly column of China analysis for The Edge in Singapore. He is a regular host anchor on CNBC Asia Squawk Box, providing analysis and commentary. Guppy has a weekly trade and economic analysis column in CGTN Digital and is a frequent guest on CGTN, The Point. He also writes regular columns for China Focus. Guppy is the president of the Northern Territory office of the Australian China Business Council. He is retained by several international organisations to advise of China business development strategies. Guppy is the author of several books on China, including China For SMEs. He has nine popular books published by John Wiley. These include Trend Trading and The 36 Strategies of the Chinese For Financial Traders. Four of these books available in Chinese.
