From Christmas trees to Santa Claus, to carols, lights and decorations, have you ever wondered how all these much-loved customs came about?
In this book we will explore all the traditions that we associate with and enjoy over the festive holiday period and uncover some fascinating facts about the history behind them from around the world.
Deeply entrenched in Western culture, we often forget what this magical time was originally celebrated for - the birth of Jesus Christ. It represents a time of peace and goodwill to all, but in modern day life this often gets lost in the big commercial merry-go-round with parties and gifts galore that it has become.
Interestingly, some of the traditions we know so well actually started over 2,000 years ago before Jesus was born.
So, let's walk through the mists of time and legends and explore all the captivating snippets of historical customs that have led us to where we are today.

Autorenporträt
Ellie and James Richards, originally from west London, UK where they met over 36 years ago, deem themselves to be an adventurous couple in many facets of life. After several years together in the UK, they changed direction and, along with their children, started anew life in Florida USA.
Following this a few years later, was their final destination to date in sunny Andalucia in southern Spain (one of Rick Stein's favourite foodie countries!). This has enabled them to delve into multiple food cultures along the way from Europe to the USA, from Turkey to Greece and beyond. Their shared culinary journey has taken them through the streets of bustling food markets, to the heart of local kitchens and on countless gastronomic adventures.
During these years they have always loved and appreciated good food and, although their tastes have changed over time, they wanted to ensure that this recipe book encompasses a balanced collection to suit a wide audience from meat lovers to vegetarians and vegans, tospice enthusiasts and dessert fans.
Rick Stein has always been their favourite celebrity chef, particularly for his fish and seafood dishes which have always been a cornerstone of Ellie and James's own foodie passion whether cooking at home or eating out. His appeal to the couple lies in his down to earth and very real, no frills approach making him and his recipes as he presents them, both likeable and less daunting than some.
Ellie and James's natural preference in the world of cuisine lies not only in the food but the character and accessibility of the chef and his dishes. As fans of the late British Keith Floyd and also the very well known Jamie Oliver, they love Rick's work for this very reason.
With this recipe collection, they have sought to honour his legacy with "Global Gastronomy: A Tribute to Rick Stein's Culinary Voyage Across 10 Countries."
This book is a testament to their shared enthusiasm for international cuisine and their commitment to continue following Rick Stein's culinary journeys, both in their own home and in the kitchens of food lovers worldwide.
