Autorenporträt
Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill (Woodstock, November 30, 1874 - London, January 24, 1965) was a British conservative politician and statesman, chiefly remembered for his leadership as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom during World War II. He served as British Prime Minister twice (1940-45 and 1951-55). A notable orator and statesman, he was also an officer in the British Army, historian, writer, and artist. He is the only British Prime Minister to have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature and honorary citizenship of the United States. During his military career, Churchill witnessed military action in British India, the Sudan, and the Second Boer War (1899-1902). He gained fame and notoriety as a war correspondent through books describing military campaigns. He briefly served in the British Army on the Western Front during World War I (1914-1918), commanding the 6th Battalion of the Royal Scots Fusiliers. Churchill was born into a British aristocratic family, part of the Duke of Marlborough's lineage. His father, Lord Randolph Churchill, was a charismatic politician who served as Chancellor of the Exchequer of the United Kingdom. Before assuming the role of British Prime Minister, Churchill held prominent positions in UK politics for four decades. Notably, his election to Parliament in 1900; his appointment as Home Secretary in 1910; and his tenure in the Chancellorship of the Exchequer of the United Kingdom between 1924 and 1929. In 2002, he was voted by the BBC as the greatest Briton of all time.
