In A Closer Look at Quartz Crystal Microbalances, the authors first discuss the principles, characteristics, applications and development of the four kinds of quartz crystal microbalances. The importance of the detection of micro-contaminants such as antibiotic residues and pesticides, which are environmental hazards, is also emphasized. In this context, the advantages and disadvantages of quartz crystal microbalance sensors are analyzed. In closing, it is proposed that mathematical models of quartz crystal microbalances should be created on the basis of solutions of differential equations in partial derivatives, describing the elastic deformation of solids.
