This second edition of a well-received volume has been thoroughly updated and expanded to cover the most recent developments. Coverage now includes additional polymers such as polyindole and polyazines, composites of polymers with carbon nanotubes, metals, and metal oxides, as well as bending-beam techniques for characterization. Again, the author provides a systematic survey of the knowledge accumulated in this field in the last thirty years. This includes thermodynamic aspects, the theory of the mechanism of charge transport processes, the chemical and physical properties of these compounds, the techniques of characterization, the chemical and electrochemical methods of synthesis as well as the application of these systems. The book contains a compilation of the polymers prepared so far and covers the relevant literature with almost 2000 references.

From the reviews:
"The book reviewed here deals almost exclusively with intrinsically conducting polymers (ICPs). ... the authors presumed aim-to provide an update and description of the state-of-the-art-a specific literature review providing an update would have been a good idea in this rapidly growing subject. ... The book is carefully prepared ... . The book ... use as an addition to libraries and laboratories where the subject of ICPs is pursued already." (R. Holze, Journal of Applied Electrochemistry, Vol. 39, 2009)
"Since the discovery of conducting polymers (CP) there are quite an impressive number of books published on this topic. ... F. Scholz, the editor of the series, decided to print an additional book on that topic pointing out by the subtitle 'A New Era in Electrochemistry' ... use in electrochemical devices and practical applications. ... The book presents a valuable guide through the great deal of the research done on conductive polymers, and ... welcome to the researchers as a precious stock of 1633 references!" (Ljerka Duic, Croatica Chemica Acta, Vol. 82 (3), 2009)
