William Lucky stumbles into the chance of a lifetime when he meets racing car owner, Mr. Lovitz, and wins the most prestigious racing event of the year 1924, the Indy 500 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. His fame expands and soon, he no longer remembers a time when he raced sober, and barely survives a racing accident.
Mr. Lovitz's daughter, Nina, has issues of her own. Unable to confide in her emotionally fragile mother, she runs away from home. But old traumas resurface and Nina is haunted by her past worse than ever before.
