Reading fiction and criticism by Joseph Addison, Samuel Johnson, Ann Radcliffe, Mary Shelley and Walter Scott, among others, Sandner argues that the fantastic functions as a discourse of the sublime imagination and thereby redefines the antecedents of the fantastic.
