This book reviews in detail the cryogenic technologies used in the European Spallation Source (ESS) laboratory. ESS is an accelerator-driven neutron source designed to provide the world's brightest neutron source. The ESS's unique capabilities will both greatly exceed and complement those of today's leading neutron sources, enabling new opportunities for researchers across the spectrum of scientific discovery, including materials and life sciences, energy, environmental technology, cultural heritage and fundamental physics. The total cost of the ESS project is roughly Euro 3 billion.
Cryogenics is a key enabling technology for ESS, playing a pivotal role in the accelerator, target and instrument systems. The ESS cryogenic system is both large and state-of-the-art. This book describes the ESS cryogenic system, including the evolution of the design, final design, procurement, construction, installation, commissioning and operating experience. Detailed design information and operating data will be provided. Lessons learned will be highlighted and the unique aspects of working in a brand new laboratory with significant in-kind contributions will be covered.
