This translation was first acclaimed in the 1985 Royal Shakespeare Company production with Derek Jacobi as Cyrano. Six years later Burgess provided the sub-titles for the hit film version with Gerard Depardieu, and the sub-titles won as much praise as did the film itself!

Edmond Rostand (1868-1918) wrote several plays which were mightily successful in their time, providing starring roles for the likes of Sarah Bernhardt and Coquelin. But only Cyrano de Bergerac still survives.

Anthony Burgess was the author of over fifty books, among them the novel, The Clockwork Orange, as well as stage plays, screenplays and translations.

Autorenporträt

Born in Marseilles in 1868, Rodstand wrote in reaction to the prevailing vogue for Naturalism. His first performed play, The Romanesques, was staged by the Comédie-Français in 1894. La Princesse Lointaine (1985) provided a leading role for Sarah Bernhardt, as did La Samaritaine (1897). Rostand's most famous character, Cyrano de Bergerac, was first created by Coquelin at the Porte-Saint-Martin in 1897 and repeated over four hundred times. There followed L'Aiglon (1900) and Chantecler (1910), first perfomed by Lucien Guitry after the death of Coquelin for whom Rostand had written it. La Derniere Nuit de Don Juan was left unfinished at Rostand's death in Paris in 1918.
