Theater critics say that the success of "Cyrano de Bergerac" is mainly due to its conversion into a popular symbol, embodying the ideal of the people by presenting a man who despises the powerful, is courageous, noble in sentiment, sensitive, and capable of sacrificing himself for others' happiness. The undeniable fact is that "Cyrano," in its multiple versions, has captivated millions of people worldwide. It is a timeless work that undoubtedly deserves to be seen and read.

Autorenporträt
Edmond Eugène Alexis Rostand was a French poet and playwright, born on April 1, 1868, in Marseille, France. His fame is primarily due to his authorship of the well-known play "Cyrano de Bergerac." Edmond was the son of the economist Eugène Rostand. In 1880, his father took the family-Edmond, his mother, and two cousins-to the elegant spa of Bagnères-de-Luchon. Initially settled in the "Chalet Spont," and later in the "Villa Devalz," they eventually built the "Villa Julia" near the Casino. Edmond Rostand lived in Luchon for 22 years, which inspired his early works. A law graduate, he never practiced the profession, and from the beginning of college, he frequented literary circles, where he met his great love, the poet Rosemonde Etiennette Gérard, author of the book "Les Pipeaux." His greatest work, the play "Cyrano de Bergerac," premiered with resounding success in 1897 in Paris at the Théâtre de la Porte-Saint-Martin. The play "Cyrano de Bergerac" transformed Rostand into a true idol of the French public, making him a member of the French Academy in 1904. However, a victim of pneumonia, he retired to Cambo-les-Bains in the Basque region, where he lived discreetly for nine years. He returned to the stage only in 1910 with "Chantecler," the story of a rooster who believes that his crowing makes the sun rise. Rostand also wrote one last play, "La Dernière Nuit de Don Juan" ("The Last Night of Don Juan"), which remained incomplete but was staged in 1921, three years after his death in Paris in 1918.
