Autorenporträt
Micheál Ó Ruairc is a poet, short story writer and novelist from Leitriúich in Kerry. He was born on the peninsula known locally as Cloghane-Brandon. He completed his BA degree in the National University of Ireland, Cork, and in 1991 he was awarded an MA in Modern Irish from the National University of Ireland, Maynooth. He won literary awards in the Oireachtas na Gaeilge competitions in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006. He won Duais an Mhaolánaigh in 2006 for his short story, Daoine a Itheann Daoine and in 2008 for his short story An Briatharchath. He won the major Oireachtas award in 2009 for the story collection, Daoine a Itheann Daoine (Cló Iar-Chonnachta, 2009). In 2007 he was awarded the major prize and perpetual trophy in the Dún Laoighaire/Rathdown poetry competition for his poem Naomh Caoimhín agus na hÉin. He has written school text books and he is an expert on the Leaving Certificate course. His latest book Tóraíocht Taisce, a novel for teenagers, was published by Cois Life in 2011. For the last 15 years he has organized writing workshops in various parts of the country: Galway; Cork; Kerry and Dublin. He is a book reviewer and critic and has published reviews in Comhar, Feasta and other magazines. He can be heard frequently on RTÉ Raidió 1 and RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta. He has been on the board of Comhar magazine since 2008. He is a member of the board of Áras na Scríbhneoirí, the Irish Writers' Centre since March 2010. He has lived in Dublin for many years, has spent his life teaching and writing, and has been a full-time writer since 2009.
