Ha, das Buch geht ebenso dramatisch in die nächste Runde, wie es im Vorgängerband "Lion of Macedon" aufgehört hat. Parmenion hat sich als General von Philipp von Makedonien den Namen "Death of Nations" angedient und zusammen erobern sie Griechenland. Währenddessen kämpft ein mächtiger Chaosgeist im Inneren von Philipps Sohn Alexander um die Kontrolle. Doch bevor es dazu kommen kann, entführt ein Magierkönig den jungen Prinzen in eine andere Welt. Parmenion, der Alexander auf eine schicksalsträchtige Weise verbunden ist, folgt ihm in ein Griechenland in einem parallelen Universum. Vieles ist gleich, alles ist anders.
Anders als im historisch angelegten Vorband holt Gemmell hier mit der Magiekeule weit aus: Fremde Welten werden entdeckt, mächtige Magier bekämpft und die griechische Mythologie auf eine faszinierende Art und Weise zum Leben erweckt! Wieder einmal hat mich Gemmel kreativ sehr überrascht, weil er erneut brillante Wendungen und ausgefeilte Züge entwickelt, die dem Werk fern ausgetretener Fantasypfade gänzlich neue Nuancen abgewinnen. Parmenion entpuppt sich wie erneut als ein formidabler Charakter, der zwar als General scheinbar an zweiter Stelle steht, aber bei einer Schachpartie a la Gemmell können auch Bauern Könige schlagen. Und wenn zu guter Letzte erneut Sparta und seine Phalanxen in die Schlacht geführt werden, dann, ja dann rockt das Leserherz.
Leider muss ich einen Stern abziehen, weil dieses durchweg grandios geschriebene Buch ganz am Schluss leider ein nur mäßiges Ende findet. Das Ende ist wirklich gut, aber nach einer Dramatik ohnesgleichen fällt es eindeutig ab und verhindert, dass "Dark Prince" zum Meilenstein von Gemmels Werken wird ... schade!
Fazit:
Wer intelligente Fantasy schätzt und dessen Herz bei der Erwähnung des Wortes "Sparta" ebenso anschwillt wie meines, der kommt um dieses Buch und den wackeren Parmenion definitiv nicht herum!
