For some time now, the German-speaking countries have been experiencing a general boom in the history of universities, but particularly in the history of individual subjects. Other Austrian universities have long been in possession of monographs on the history of the subject of history, but not the 'Capitals of Europe University of Vienna'. The volume centres on the gradual proliferation and specialisation of chairs, seminars and institutes for the study of history taking place along with the life, work and impacts of their professors. This expansion has been going on since the last quarter of the 18th, but particularly since the middle of the 19th century. Some sections are moreover devoted to the beginning of women's access to universities, the Academic Association of German Historians in Vienna, Viennese historians under National Socialism and the denazification and restoration post-1945.
