The wife of a south-London gangster-boss is brutally beaten and murdered. Eyewitnesses identify her lover Tony Simpson as the murderer. Simpson reads in the morning paper of the police hunt for him, but after a night of heavy drinking he suffers from amnesia and has no alibi. His wife refuses support, and he must seek shelter with friends. Soon he discovers a devious plot to frame him and he finds out that a look-alike is impersonating him. Knowing that the police would not believe him, he sets out to find the murderer himself.

The victim's husband, who is also his best friend, sets a trap for him but he manages to escape it. Then, one of the young women sheltering him is also murdered, the other one attacked and left for dead, and the police are convinced that Simpson is their man.

Simpson concerned about his other friend's safety gives himself up to the police, and is charged with murder. In the meantime, the killings go on, but because the 'modus operandi' is different in each case, the police do not connect them up. Despite overwhelming evidence against him, the truth, at last, emerges during an Old Bailey trial and puts a twist in the tale.

What would any normal person do in a situation like this? In today's world, none of us are safe from miscarriages of justice and must be ready to fight for our existence.

Autorenporträt

Steve Lawson was born in Budapest. His mother was in show-business and his grandparents raised him. His best friend was killed during the uprising in Hungary, he was wounded, captured and maltreated by State Security. After his release was ordered by the new government, he continued fighting the Red Army until the uprising was crushed. When reprisals began, he escaped and headed for England. After spending some time in refugee camps, he travelled to Scotland where he became a celebrity. A while later, he went to London where he was granted political asylum, had jobs ranging from door-to-door salesman of various articles, digging tunnels for Underground trains, then engineer and manager and married a nice girl. Following a lecture at an international engineering conference and publication of a technical paper, he was offered a job as consultant engineer on spacecraft and satellite development projects for NASA and ESA, and after his divorce years later he left England. He lives with his second wife in a town north of Lake Constance in Germany. He has travelled the world, met many people of various nationalities, and has collected themes for his novels.
