After Perry Jacobs is released from prison, he convinces his best friend Cedar to jump a freight train for kicks. Once the girl turns on them, they suddenly find themselves the focus of a manhunt. The horrors Perry witnessed inside prison where only the most brutal survive won't be easy to shake. Because of this, he puts himself deeper in trouble and the spiraling affect of his actions only compounds his desperateness. With every lawman in the country looking for him, Perry's journey takes him to small towns run by brutal deputies and train camps run by equally brutal drifters. But the train is as dark a beast as the one younger Perry thought had given his brother cancer.
Relationships are short-lived in this action-packed story of survival, since Perry's past and present involvement in the law is so toxic. Still, he comes to terms with his demons as his affection for a woman that nursed him back to heath changes him. He must eventually choose between this woman and an impossible promise, before it ultimately drives him to another confrontation. One that marks the beginning of an inescapable conclusion.
