The rules would have deregulated a system of government-run wholesale markets, enabling farmers to sell directly to food processors. However, farmers believed that this would lead to the elimination of government-guaranteed price floors, resulting in lower crop prices. This prompted opposition to the new laws. Later, the Supreme Court suspended the execution of the farm laws and created a commission to investigate farmer complaints over the agricultural legislation. In a public address in November, 2021prime minister Narendra Modi declared that his administration will abolish the legislation.
