Hudson Maxim (1853–1927) was an American inventor, as well as a prolific author, best known for his work in military ordnance and explosives. Born in Orneville, Maine, Hudson Maxim was the brother of Hiram Maxim, the inventor of the Maxim machine gun. Although overshadowed by his brother's stark contributions to automatic weaponry, Hudson made his mark through the development of smokeless gunpowder and various high-explosive compounds, influencing the arms industry at a pivotal time in history. A pioneering chemist and self-taught expert in ballistics, his literary ambitions led him to address the issues of national defense and warfare from a technical and patriotic perspective.
