The first chapter begins in 1869 with Vincent Markham, the first district attorney, who served before Colorado achieved statehood. The book concludes in 2021 with Beth McCann, Denver's first female district attorney.

The district attorney has always been an elected official. The district attorneys were never career prosecutors in the early years. Of the 29 district attorneys covered in this book, 20 served one term and 9 served two or more.

Mitch Morrissey worked in the Denver district attorney's office for more than 30 years, including three terms as the elected district attorney (2005 to 2017). He is an international expert on the use of DNA technology in criminal prosecutions and exonerating innocent people. After retiring from the district attorney's office, he co-founded United Data Connect, a company that helps solve cold cases using DNA and genetic genealogy. Mitch is a fourth-generation Colorado native.
