The Rhine, a river in the heart of Europe, has always been fascinating for arts and sciences. This volume reflects traditional images of the Rhine and enlarges the view with new perspectives. Authors from various disciplines present the river from a German-French perspective as a source of life and erotic literature but also as a death bringing source of violence and furthermore the river landscape as a place of refuge and exile. Additionally, the authors present the significance of the Rhine and the Rhineland as places of remembrance and concentrate on the German-French Rhine literature. By focusing on the intersection between these two countries the present volume analyses the German-French relationship in general and aspects of the various cultural and historical relations in detail.
