The SS was forbidden and dissolved in 1945 by the allies. However, the history of this criminal organisation did not end. Moreover, at this point a debate on the significance, responsibility and effect of the SS and its members was taking place - a debate that lasts until today. Allegations of collective guilt were standing against the efforts of SS groups to distance themselves from the whole organisation. The narrative of the devilish SS officer came to live in magazines and films and turned the SS into an exclusive secret organisation in the media. The contributions in this volume analyse the prosecution of the SS after 1945, the personal coteries and political continuities as well as the different dimensions of a still virulent culture of remembrance of the SS in Europe.
