Autorenporträt
Charles Oliver was born as the son of a royal servant who served at Balmoral during Queen Victoria's reign. He followed in his father's footsteps and worked for the royal household for over sixty years at Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, and Balmoral. It was at the Palace that Charles became fascinated by the royal kitchens, and amassed a considerable collection of royal dining material.

In 1968, three years after his death, his diaries and collections were discovered by newspaper editor turned author, Jack Fishman, but it wasn't until Fishman's death in 1997 that the original manuscript for this book was found. It formed the basis of a never-before-seen glimpse into the life of the royal family during the mid-twentieth century, including snapshots of Queen Elizabeth, Prince Philip and of their young children, along with other rare royal photographs.
