Carl Bessler is sent to occupied Paris to spy for SIS under false identity. His task is to locate the treasure believed to be hidden somewehere in France, but in order to do that he has to infiltrate the upper echelons of the German military in the city, and find out which one of the officers might be in possession of some valuable information. Soon, he finds himself entangled in intrigues, unexpected sexual encounters, and obscene, wild parties. While playing his part, and indulging in these activities to maintain relationships with powerful people, he finds more than the treasure he has been looking for.

Although at first determined to complete his task and earn his freedom, he eventually realizes that he might need to improvise his exit strategy.
