The most practical book on prayer that you will ever read!
Originally published in 1976 followed by multiple printings and editions, Hope's book, Discovering How to Pray, became a best seller in the Christian marketplace. Considered a classic among books on prayer, she is the one who coined the term, "Arrow Prayers," now in common use. Made fresh for new readers, she offers tips on personal and effective means of prayer to enrich a person's relationship with God, with results!
"This little book has had an outsize influence on Christians around the world-and on me and my prayer life. I've found that lots of books will teach you tons of things about prayer, but they don't teach you how to do it. One of the best things about Hope's book is this: it will help you to pray."
~Rev. James Earl Mead, D.Min, DHL,
Author, Jesus And
Discovering How to Pray covers such topics as the use of "Arrow Prayers," creating a quiet place to pray, how Christian meditation differs from New Age practices, the skill of inner-listening, and picturing prayer as already answered, among other easy to apply lessons. Perfect for individual inspiration or for group bible study.
Her book has sold hundreds of thousands of copies and has been translated into eight other languages (many with multiple printings) including Korean, Afrikaans, Arabic, German, Kannada (in India), Spanish, Maylay, and Lithuanian.
Hope went on to write four more books, which are also now out of print. After re-obtaining the rights to publish her books from the original publisher, at age 94, she asked her adult children if they would find a way to make sure they were available again in fresh paperback and digital formats for a new generation of readers. They began with re-publishing her book on prayer through Normandy Park Press.
Her daughter-in-law, Linda MacDonald, author of How to Help Your Spouse Heal from Your Affair, oversaw the project.
Editorial Review:
"In 1977, my first summer on Young Life Staff, I found myself in a new town, a new job, and no friends. My first week at a local board meeting, I met some new friends who gave me the book, Discovering How to Pray, as a welcome gift. I didn't know I needed such a book, as I was headed for Fuller Seminary that fall and was now "officially" in full time ministry. Yet I soon discovered that, as I began my ministry journey, there was (and is) much that I have to learn about prayer. In this practical book, Hope helped me to "throw the whole weight of my anxieties upon him" (1 Peter 5:7, JB Phillips). That summer, prayer shifted from a religious obligation to a welcome and longed for refuge. "Arrow prayers" became regular practices that to this day I still share with others. I am grateful that Hope's family is reissuing Discovering How to Pray. May new generations be as captivated by the unchanging gift of prayer through it as I was nearly a half a century ago."
