Hugh Lofting (1886-1947) was an English author best known for creating the classic children's series 'Doctor Dolittle.' Born in Maidenhead, Berkshire, he was educated at Mount St Mary's College in Sheffield, and later studied civil engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States.
