Autorenporträt
Hugh Lofting (1886-1947) was an English author best known for creating the classic children's series 'Doctor Dolittle.' Born in Maidenhead, Berkshire, he was educated at Mount St Mary's College in Sheffield, and later studied civil engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States. Lofting's literary career was inadvertently sparked by his desire to entertain his children through letters while serving in the trenches during World War I, where he was reluctant to expose them to the realities of war. Instead, he crafted stories about a kind-hearted doctor who could communicate with animals-a narrative that would enchant generations of readers. 'Doctor Dolittle' debuted with 'The Story of Doctor Dolittle' (1920), followed by a succession of sequels that expanded the whimsical universe of the animal-speaking physician. These works are characterized by their imaginative plots, humanistic values, and advocacy for animal rights, elements that articulated Lofting's creative vision and compassion. The series, encapsulating 10 books including 'The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle' (1922) and 'Doctor Dolittle's Zoo' (1925), has been illustrated and celebrated for bringing to life an extraordinary world with a blend of humor and moral lessons. Lofting's contributions to children's literature have left an indelible mark and his 'Doctor Dolittle' books remain a treasured legacy within the genre.
