"She needs the job, Courtney," Rita said, eyeing her son suspiciously. "Without a job, Charlotte will never be able to keep her house. And she's got Jarred and Jewell to take care of.
Don't forget about that."
Courtney smiled at his mother. Even though Rita was in her fifties, she was still a strikingly attractive woman, and her figure was just as trim yet curvaceous as it always had been.
"Well, dear mother of mine," he said, sarcasm dripping from every word, "this does put a little different light on our relationship, doesn't it? Let's see now . . . how many times have you insulted me, called me a criminal and worse?"
Rita groaned softly, turning her eyes down to the floor. Courtney was enjoying his power over her. He had always been that way, always looking to use a situation for his own best advantage, never hesitating to kick someone when they were down and needed help. That was how he had become a fairly wealthy man, Rita suspected. Courtney would do anything to get what he wanted, and Rita just couldn't understand how she'd gone wrong with him.
"Please . . . I'm not asking for myself," Rita continued, unable to look into her son's cold, cruel eyes. "Charlotte has had an awful tough time of it since the divorce. It's not easy raising two children by herself. She needs the job from you. She really does. Without the job . . . she'll never keep her house."
"You know, Mother, you seem to talk about my sister, niece and nephew as though somehow they were my responsibility. That's where you're wrong. These people aren't my responsibility at all. I only have to worry about my sons, Daniel and Grant. What happens in Charlotte's life is her own problem."
