Derek Padula es el autor de The Dao of Dragon Ball, el primer libro y página web en revelar la profunda historia, filosofía y raíces culturales del manganime número #1 del mundo. La primera vez que Derek vió el anime de Dragon Ball fue en 1997. Su amor por la serie le inspiró para iniciarse en el entrenamiento de las artes marciales, destacando el Shàolín g¿ngfu, el tàijí-quán, el qìg¿ng, el karate y la meditación F¿lún Dàf¿. Derek consiguió su graduado en East Asian Studies y otro secundario de chino en Western Michigan University. Estudió en el extranjero en B¿ij¿ng (China), donde entrenó con los monjes budistas Shàolín y un maestro espadachín tàijí-daoísta. Después de regresar a casa, se convirtió en una autoridad sobre Dragon Ball.
