Nathan McGovern is a widower and a retired US Army Master Sergeant living in a small town in North Carolina whose quiet, comfortable life changes after a visit from an old friend. He introduces Nathan to the world of online dating and begins persuading him to drop his voluntary celibacy. Nathan creates an anonymous profile out of curiosity but soon becomes obsessed with an enigmatic, mysterious woman he meets online and starts chatting with every night. Hidden behind aliases, and without seeing any pictures that might reveal their identities, they engage in obscene conversations and fantasies. As time goes by, Nathan becomes suspicious that the woman, whose online name is Justine, might be much closer to him than he'd initially thought. His life becomes even more complicated when 20-year-old Jamie moves in, through a home-sharing program he signed up for a long time ago. Her presence becomes annoying fairly quickly and makes his investigation even harder.
