My name is Ivory Monique Sims, and I'm a single mother of a precious autistic kid! I had Dryston at the age of twenty-three and found out he had autism at his age of two! He is now five, and this adventure just keeps on giving me life! I've learned a lot about myself in this journey, and I still have a lot to learn and do! Nothing is impossible. I can do this, and like Ellen DeGeneres says, "Be kind to one another. That is the key!" This book is to give you insight. Put yourself in their shoes. For an autistic person, things can be difficult, so you have to show them in different ways to handle things and constantly give them reassurance that things will get better and nothing is impossible to accomplish. Crying at times may seem extreme when things don't happen as planned. Not being able to communicate your feelings can be stressful and we as parents must adjust. Routine is everything to an autistic child. As parents, you must be patient even when it feels like you're at your wits end. Simple tasks such as feeding themselves, potty training or tying their shoes may take more time and effort to learn but don't get discouraged because they can feel what you feel, believe it or not! I try as a parent to hide the negative feelings from him because I don't want him to think that he isn't enough, and if I can't, I explain to him, "Mommy is just frustrated with herself for not figuring this out for you." So in conclusion, autistic people are just like us. We have emotions and need love too, so spread the unconditional love, and we all will be okay. We both are growing together but in different ways! I'm an awesome mom, and I know it!
