In the year 878, Eadgar was a member of King Alfred's guard. On a visit home, he learns of a raid on the Hampshire coast. Eadgar sets out with three locals to investigate. An entire town had been destroyed. Eadgar tells two of the locals to get word to King Alfred, and Eadgar goes with the remaining companion to investigate the Isle of Wight, the nearest place where enemies would be likely to be encamped if they hadn't left the area.
