This book is about "earthly reflections." But all natural objects reflect light to some degree. So what we will examine are the ones which are highly reflective, or have interesting causes or effects. We will be looking at reflections from clouds, snow and ice, liquid water, rocks, sand and dust, and plants and animals. Some of the phenomena are pretty, such as rainbows in the sky, glitter patterns on the ocean, or the iridescence of "play-of-color" opal. And some have profound effects on our lives, by influencing world climate. The tiny structure that give rise to certain colors in animals may directly impact their survival, their particular reflection helping them find mates, avoid predators, or control their body temperature. Or the color may be attractive to us, but incidental to the biological function of the structure.
The book is profusely illustrated, with 70 figures (and two tables), many of them color photos.
