A former meat cutter and truck driver, as well as a recipient of the MacArthur Fellowship and the Lannan Literary Award, his many books include several on cities, politics, and ecology, and a classic trilogy on the history of Los Angeles: City of Quartz, Set the Night on Fire, and Ecology of Fear.
